Joseph Smullen, PsyD, LCSW

Joseph Smullen, PsyD, LCSW

Hello. My name is Joseph. I am a licensed clinical social worker, and I see teenagers and adults for psychotherapy.

Education

Bachelor of Arts, Sociology/Psychology Texas A&M- CC, 2005

Master of Social Work, Texas State University, 2012

Doctor of Psychology, California Southern, 2024

My Approach

I hold a unique combination of credentials that allows me to provide comprehensive mental health care, blending a "big picture" understanding with specialized intervention.

  • LCSW (Licensed Clinical Social Worker): My social work background provides the systemic context to understand how your environment, relationships, and family systems impact your well-being.

  • PsyD (Doctor of Psychology): My doctoral training provides clinical precision. I pursued this advanced degree to master the application of psychotherapy, allowing me to treat complex struggles using high-level clinical interventions.

My Core Philosophy:

I am an Integrationist Psychotherapist with a Catholic-Christian worldview. My practice is built on the conviction that faith and reason are complementary truths.

  • For Christian Clients: I provide care for clients of all denominations (Catholic, Protestant, Orthodox, Non-Denominational). I tailor our work to respect your specific traditions while operating from our shared foundation of faith

  • For Non-Christian Clients: I welcome clients of all backgrounds. I offer a general psycho-spiritual approach that respects your values, focusing on meaning, purpose, and inner peace without imposing religious doctrine.

The "Insider Perspective"

I utilize an emic approach (an "insider's perspective"). This means I do not impose a generic clinical template on you; instead, I start with your worldview to build a treatment plan that speaks your language.

For the Christian Client: We start with the Christian Worldview—an understanding of Reality, Truth, Identity, Values, and Meaning derived from God. Within this framework, we utilize evidence-based traditional practices—including prayer, scripture reading, mercy work, and the cultivation of virtue—alongside modern clinical tools. We do not "add" faith to psychology; we use psychology to support your walk of faith.

For the General or Non-Religious Client: We start with your personal worldview. The "insider" perspective means I enter your world to understand your specific framework for reality, truth, and values. We identify your unique sources of meaning—whether that is connection, ethics, nature, or community—and use your own vocabulary to define healing. We work within your belief system to identify the virtues and practices that help you flourish.

Integrating Therapeutic Styles

To support these frameworks, I weave together four proven therapeutic styles:

  • Narrative Therapy: We examine the narratives that shape your identity. For the Christian, we help you locate your personal experiences within God’s grand story. We work to re-author these narratives to align with God's Truth, affirming your identity in Christ and grounding your value, morality, meaning, and purpose in Him. For the general client, we examine how your personal history shapes your current reality, working to re-author narratives that align with your core self and personal values.

  • Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT): We cultivate psychological flexibility to help you navigate difficult thoughts and feelings. For the Christian, we focus on pivoting toward virtue and value-driven action contextualized by God's presence. For the general client, we focus on pivoting toward virtue and value-driven action that aligns with your core self.
  • Attachment Theory: We explore how early bonds shape your connections today. For the Christian, we focus on healing and strengthening attachment to God, others, and self. For the general client, we work to heal relational wounds and restore the ability to build secure, healthy connections with yourself and those around you.

  • Positive Psychology: We move beyond simply fixing what is wrong to building what is right. For the Christian, we focus on cultivating virtues consistent with your faith to foster spiritual maturity and character. For the general client, we identify and build upon your core strengths and virtues to help you not just survive, but flourish.

How I View You: Dignity, Resilience, and Hope

My therapeutic work is grounded in a specific anthropology—a view of what it means to be human—that links your inherent worth to your capacity for healing.

The Foundation: Imago Dei: I view every client through the lens of the Imago Dei. You are created in the Image of God, possessing inherent dignity and infinite worth that cannot be earned, lost, or measured by your productivity or failures. No matter your diagnosis or history, I view you not as a "problem to be solved," but as a person of immense value deserving of honor and respect.

The Reality: Damaged but Not Destroyed: Because we live in a fallen world, we all carry wounds. However, because you bear the Image of God, your core identity is indestructible. I operate on the belief that while we may be damaged by trauma, sin, or circumstance, we are never destroyed. Your brokenness is real, but it does not define the totality of who you are. You are resilient by design.

The Pathway: Redemptive Suffering: Because you are resilient, your pain is not meaningless. We practice Redemptive Suffering, the belief that when suffering is processed in a safe environment, it can be transformed.

  • For the Christian Client: We explore how your pain, when united with the suffering of Christ, can become a pathway to spiritual intimacy and purification. We move toward the hope that God can redeem even the darkest moments, using them to cultivate deep empathy and character.

  • For the General Client: We view this through the lens of Post-Traumatic Growth. We work to transmute your pain into wisdom, allowing you to emerge from struggle with a deeper capacity for connection, meaning, and strength.
